LanzaTech Boosts Stake in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Pioneer LanzaJet with $20 Million Financing Round

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology and production company LanzaJet has announced that it has successfully secured at least $20 million in new financing. The capital injection is earmarked to scale production capabilities and supply sustainable aviation fuel to global customers directly from its flagship Freedom Pines Fuels facility located in Soperton, Georgia.

Launched originally in 2020 as a spin-off by carbon recycling technology company LanzaTech, the Illinois-based LanzaJet has established itself as a prominent player in the global energy transition. The company has developed and commercialized pioneering Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, which enables the large-scale production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. This innovative process utilizes waste-based and sustainable ethanol sources, encompassing low-carbon sugarcane, dedicated energy crops, forest residuals, agricultural waste, and various forms of organic waste. By turning these materials into high-grade jet fuel, LanzaJet addresses one of the hardest-to-abate sectors in the global economy.

The newly announced financing round is strongly backed by key strategic stakeholders, including LanzaTech, prominent investor Vinod Khosla, and the broader LanzaJet Board of Directors. As a central component of these financial transactions, LanzaTech will significantly increase its ownership stake in LanzaJet. According to company disclosures, this fresh infusion of capital forms an integral part of a broader recapitalization and debt reduction initiative recently undertaken by LanzaJet’s core shareholders and existing investors to fortify the company’s financial foundation as it moves into its next operational chapter.

Alongside the financial updates, LanzaJet announced leadership transitions to guide the organization forward. Jennifer Holmgren, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaTech, will continue in her role as Chair of the LanzaJet Board while also stepping in to serve as interim Chief Executive Officer. Holmgren’s hands-on leadership is intended to support the company smoothly through its next phase of commercial growth and market expansion. This transition follows the departure of outgoing CEO Jimmy Samaritzis, who recently announced he is stepping down from his executive position at LanzaJet to pursue and take on another major leadership opportunity within the broader sustainable aviation fuel industry.

This latest round of financing and leadership adjustment closely follows a major operational milestone achieved by the company. In November 2025, LanzaJet proudly announced that it had successfully achieved full plant operation and commenced continuous fuel production at Freedom Pines Fuels. Located in Soperton, Georgia, the facility stands as the world’s first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet production plant. The milestone-setting facility boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. Furthermore, the plant has already demonstrated its technical prowess by successfully producing commercial quantities of alternative fuels meeting strict international ASTM specifications, proving that the technology is ready for prime-time adoption by commercial airlines and global logistics providers.

Reflecting on the company’s trajectory and the significance of the new financial backing, Jennifer Holmgren highlighted the remarkable progress achieved since the firm’s inception.

“LanzaTech has taken first-of-a-kind technology to profitable commercial operation,” Holmgren said. “With a larger ownership stake and the Board’s full support, we look forward to bringing Freedom Pines Fuels and future LanzaJet plants to the same commercial success.”

The ongoing scale-up of the Soperton facility and the reinforcement of LanzaJet’s capital structure come at a critical time for the aviation industry, which faces mounting regulatory pressures and voluntary commitments to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. With airlines increasingly seeking reliable offtake agreements for low-carbon fuels to meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets, LanzaJet’s proprietary ATJ pathway offers a vital scalable solution. By transforming everyday waste and sustainable agricultural outputs into high-performance drop-in jet fuel, the company remains positioned at the vanguard of the global green finance and energy transition movement.
