Maritime Fuel Tech Startup Blaze Energy Secures $6.5 Million in Seed Funding to Drive Clean Energy Transition

Maritime fuel technology startup Blaze Energy has announced that it has successfully raised $6.5 million in a seed funding round. The fresh capital injection is specifically aimed at accelerating the commercial deployment of the company’s pioneering technology, which is designed to enable existing shipping engines to operate seamlessly on multiple alternative fuels.

The announcement comes at a critical juncture for the global maritime shipping industry. Ship owners and operators are facing mounting regulatory pressure to significantly reduce their carbon emissions and greenhouse gas footprints. At the same time, the industry struggles with a lack of viable, standardized options for vessels currently in service, compounded by widespread uncertainty over which alternative fuels will ultimately dominate the global energy market in the decades ahead. Because commercial cargo vessels and ships typically remain in active service for decades, maritime operators face formidable financial and logistical challenges when attempting to transition to lower-emission fuels. Traditionally, this transition would require replacing existing engines entirely or committing prematurely to a single fuel type, carrying high financial risks if the chosen fuel fails to become the industry standard.

Blaze Raises $6.5 Million to Enable Ships to Run on Clean Fuel

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Colorado, Blaze Energy specializes in developing fuel-flexible engine technology. The company’s core mission is to empower maritime vessels to operate flexibly across a variety of alternative fuels, including ammonia, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

At the heart of the company’s innovation is its proprietary "Flex-Fuel Reformer System." This technology utilizes compact, engine-integrated fuel reforming mechanisms to convert alternative fuels into a hydrogen-rich mixture directly onboard the vessel. By doing so, the system enables hydrogen-assisted combustion using existing engine platforms already installed on ships. According to Blaze Energy, this approach provides a reliable, practical pathway for ship owners to adopt alternative fuels, improve overall vessel efficiency, and drastically cut emissions without the prohibitive expense of replacing existing engines or locking themselves into a single, potentially obsolete fuel infrastructure.

Rok Sitar, CEO and co-founder at Blaze Energy, emphasized the immense operational pressures currently weighing on maritime executives. Discussing the complex landscape of modern shipping, Sitar noted that maritime operations historically focused primarily on moving cargo safely, on time, and economically. Today, however, operators must navigate the complexities of volatile fuel markets, sweeping energy shifts, and geopolitical volatility simply to keep their vessels running efficiently. Sitar stated that Blaze Energy was established specifically to cut through that uncertainty, providing ship owners with essential fuel flexibility through their existing assets so they can remain resilient against any future industry disruptions.

Blaze Raises $6.5 Million to Enable Ships to Run on Clean Fuel

The newly secured $6.5 million seed financing round will be strategically deployed to support several critical milestones for the startup. These include extensive marine engine testing, the expansion of the company’s corporate and operational footprint in the United States and Norway, and the ultimate commercial deployment of its technology. Looking ahead on its roadmap, Blaze plans to conduct land-based testing before initiating a pilot project of its Reformer System aboard a Lomar Shipping vessel in 2027. This pilot aims to validate the technology rigorously under authentic maritime operating conditions. Successful validation will establish a clear pathway for retrofitting existing vessels currently on the water, while also laying the groundwork for a dedicated newbuild product launch scheduled for 2028.

The financing round attracted strong backing from prominent venture capital and private equity investors. The funding was co-led by Propeller Ventures and Catalyzer Ventures, with additional participation from Safar Partners, SOSV, Desai Ventures, and Cartography Capital.

Kristina Johnson, Partner at Catalyzer Ventures, underscored the value proposition of the startup’s technology in the context of tightening environmental mandates. Johnson noted that Blaze Energy’s Reformer System offers ship owners a practical, cost-effective pathway to meet increasingly stringent global emissions requirements while simultaneously preserving the immense capital value of their existing vessels and marine infrastructure.
