Maritime Fuel Technology Startup Blaze Energy Secures $6.5 Million in Seed Funding to Accelerate Clean Shipping Solutions

Colorado-based maritime fuel technology startup Blaze Energy has announced the successful completion of a $6.5 million seed funding round. The fresh capital injection is earmarked to accelerate the commercial deployment and operational scale-up of the company’s innovative technology, which is designed to enable existing maritime shipping engines to operate seamlessly on multiple alternative fuels.

The financing arrives at a critical juncture for the global maritime shipping sector, which is facing mounting pressure to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and meet stringent international environmental regulations. Despite a clear mandate to decarbonize, ship owners and operators have been grappling with a complex landscape lacking viable, long-term options for active vessels. Furthermore, widespread uncertainty persists across the industry regarding which alternative green fuels will ultimately become dominant in the coming decades.

Blaze Raises $6.5 Million to Enable Ships to Run on Clean Fuel

Because commercial maritime vessels are typically constructed to remain in active service for decades, operators face severe operational and financial challenges when attempting to transition to lower-emission fuels. Traditionally, doing so would require either completely replacing existing marine engines at an exorbitant cost or making a high-stakes, premature commitment to a single alternative fuel before the market has matured. This predicament has slowed the industry’s green transition, leaving many fleet managers hesitant to commit capital to technologies that might soon become obsolete.

Founded in 2023, Blaze Energy was established to tackle this exact dilemma by developing fuel-flexible engine technology. Based in Colorado, the company focuses on engineering solutions that empower maritime vessels to run on a diverse array of alternative fuels, including ammonia, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). By removing the technical barriers associated with fuel switching, Blaze aims to provide ship owners with the operational flexibility required to navigate an evolving energy market.

At the core of the company’s offering is the "Flex-Fuel Reformer System." This proprietary technology utilizes compact, engine-integrated fuel reforming hardware designed to convert alternative fuels into a hydrogen-rich gas mixture directly onboard the vessel. This process facilitates hydrogen-assisted combustion, allowing standard, existing marine engine platforms to burn alternative fuels efficiently. According to Blaze Energy, the technology provides a practical pathway for ship owners to adopt lower-emission alternative fuels, dramatically improve overall vessel efficiency, and cut emissions without necessitating the costly replacement of existing engines or locking the operator into a single, restrictive fuel supply chain.

Rok Sitar, CEO and Co-Founder at Blaze Energy, emphasized the mounting complexities facing modern fleet operators in light of the changing regulatory and economic environment. Reflecting on the shifting demands of the industry, Sitar noted that maritime shipping used to be primarily focused on moving cargo safely, on time, and economically. Today, however, operators find themselves forced to become experts in volatile global fuel markets, major energy shifts, and international geopolitics simply to keep their vessels running. Sitar explained that Blaze was created specifically to cut through that profound uncertainty, offering ship owners essential fuel flexibility through their existing assets so they can remain resilient against whatever challenges arise.

The newly secured $6.5 million seed funding will be deployed across several strategic initiatives. Specifically, the capital will support extensive marine engine testing, the expansion of the company’s corporate and operational footprint in both the United States and Norway, and the ultimate commercial deployment of its technology.

As part of its commercialization roadmap, Blaze Energy plans to pilot its Reformer System aboard a vessel operated by Lomar Shipping in 2027. This sea trial will follow rigorous land-based testing designed to validate the technology under real-world maritime operating conditions. The upcoming pilot program aims to establish a reliable, proven pathway for retrofitting existing commercial vessels, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a dedicated newbuild product launch scheduled for 2028.

The seed financing round attracted strong interest from specialized climate tech and venture capital investors. The funding round was co-led by Propeller Ventures and Catalyzer Ventures, and featured participation from a roster of venture firms including Safar Partners, SOSV, Desai Ventures, and Cartography Capital.

Kristina Johnson, Partner at Catalyzer Ventures, highlighted the economic and environmental value proposition offered by the startup’s technology. Johnson stated that Blaze Energy’s Reformer System provides ship owners with a practical and cost-effective pathway to meet increasingly stringent global emissions requirements while successfully preserving the substantial financial value of their existing vessels and core maritime infrastructure.
