The appointment places Bender at the helm of a rapidly expanding global team at a time when corporate sustainability is shifting from a peripheral corporate social responsibility initiative to a core strategic imperative for multinational organizations. Bender steps into the role with a deep, long-standing institutional history at BCG, having first joined the firm in 2009. Over nearly two decades with the consultancy, he has built an extensive track record working closely with materials and process industry clients. His primary focus has centered on addressing complex strategic challenges, with particular emphasis on climate and sustainability, industrial innovation, and commercial excellence.
Prior to taking on this new global leadership position, Bender served as the head of BCG’s global work in material and process industries, an area heavily impacted by environmental regulations, resource constraints, and the urgent need for industrial decarbonization. Additionally, he led the firm’s Climate & Sustainability practice across the Europe, Middle East, South America, and Africa (EMESA) region, giving him broad international exposure to the diverse regulatory and economic frameworks shaping sustainability agendas across multiple continents.

In a statement released to announce his appointment, Bender reflected on the macroeconomic and environmental forces currently transforming the global business landscape. He emphasized that planetary boundaries and resource scarcity are no longer distant theoretical concerns; rather, they are actively reshaping economies, traditional industries, and deeply integrated global value chains.
Bender noted that these profound structural shifts are acting as powerful catalysts for innovation, capital investment, and the creation of entirely new avenues for corporate growth, competitive differentiation, and long-term resilience. At the same time, he acknowledged the increasingly complex and polarized geopolitical and economic environment in which modern businesses operate. He stressed that bridging divergent stakeholder perspectives through facts and sound economic principles will be essential to transforming these mounting environmental challenges into lasting business success and tangible planetary impact.
Bender succeeds Hubertus Meinecke, who has guided BCG’s Climate & Sustainability practice as its Global Leader since 2022. Under Meinecke’s tenure, the practice experienced substantial growth, mirroring the broader corporate adoption of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies.
BCG originally established its dedicated Center for Climate & Sustainability in 2021, strategically expanding its historical foundation in climate action to encompass a comprehensive and multifaceted array of sustainability topics. This broader remit includes critical global challenges such as biodiversity preservation, the transition toward a circular economy, industrial decarbonization, sustainable agriculture, innovative transition financing, and complex water management strategies.
Reflecting on the leadership transition and the trajectory of the market, Meinecke pointed to the accelerating pace of climate risks and the robust financial expansion projected for the environmental sector. He noted that the green economy is currently valued at approximately $5 trillion and is projected to surge to $7 trillion by 2030, reinforcing the reality that the business case for sustainability continues to strengthen year over year. Expressing full confidence in his successor, Meinecke stated that he believes Bender and the broader team are uniquely positioned to drive even greater strategic value and real-world impact than was thought possible when the practice first originated.
As Bender assumes his new responsibilities, he inherits a global practice that plays a critical advisory role for corporations, financial institutions, and governments navigating the complexities of the green transition. With regulatory scrutiny mounting worldwide and capital increasingly flowing toward sustainable business models, the leadership of BCG’s climate practice remains a bellwether position for the broader consulting and corporate advisory ecosystem.
