ISEP Launches Multi-Tier Carbon Accounting Professional Accreditation System

The Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals (ISEP) has officially announced the launch of a new, multi-tier Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors (RCAA). The system is designed to provide a reliable professional benchmark for communicating the qualifications, credentials, and specialized expertise of carbon accounting professionals across the corporate and environmental sectors.

According to ISEP, the introduction of the new register arrives at a critical juncture for global markets. As demand for robust, verifiable carbon data accelerates and corporate reporting requirements become increasingly widespread, organizations are facing unprecedented pressure to accurately measure, disclose, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, standardized climate reporting frameworks—such as those expanding under the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)—are raising the bar for corporate transparency. Despite these tightening standards, approaches to carbon accounting and the overall levels of professional expertise have historically varied widely across the industry, creating a pressing need for standardization and quality control.

ISEP CEO Sarah Mukherjee emphasized the vital importance of reliable data integrity in the modern corporate landscape, noting that as organizations across various sectors look to decarbonize and actively shrink their environmental footprints, it is essential that they have access to independently assessed, high-quality data and professional advice.

Developed in close collaboration with the Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA), the newly established register is intended to give organizations, regulators, and formal reporting schemes a much higher degree of confidence in the qualifications and hands-on experience of the professionals calculating and auditing their carbon footprints. By creating a transparent framework, the initiative addresses longstanding industry concerns regarding the variability of skills among practitioners in the rapidly evolving carbon management space.

The RCAA framework is structured to encompass four distinct professional tiers, mapping out a comprehensive career pathway for practitioners. This includes the already-launched entry-level Technical Associate grade, which is designed to recognize foundational knowledge in the field. Building upon this baseline, ISEP has introduced two new advanced levels: the Registered Practitioner and the Principal Carbon Accountant. These progressive levels reflect increasingly greater professional responsibility, advanced technical expertise, and extensive industry experience. Furthermore, a dedicated Registered Carbon Accounting Auditor grade is planned for future rollout to round out the comprehensive evaluation system.

Through the establishment of this register, ISEP aims to actively promote effective carbon accounting practices by setting high-quality benchmarks rooted in the actual knowledge and experience of seasoned professionals in the field. The organization also seeks to enhance the professional credibility of registered carbon accountants and auditors, while simultaneously providing a well-defined career pathway that offers genuine opportunities for professional growth, validation, and industry-wide recognition.

Andrew Griffiths, Co-Founder of the Carbon Accounting Alliance, highlighted the significance of the rollout, pointing out that with all three primary levels of professional registration for carbon accountants now fully launched, the industry finally possesses a robust and transparent approach to the formal qualification of credible carbon foot-printing expertise. He noted that this milestone will provide both practitioners and the end-users of corporate sustainability data with much-needed confidence in the rigorous skills of the individuals performing the calculations.
