USD/JPY Technical Outlook: Range Trading Persists as Market Weighs Key Resistance and Support Levels

The USD/JPY currency pair remained confined to a familiar range throughout last week’s trading sessions, leaving the broader technical outlook largely unchanged as market participants evaluate near-term momentum and longer-term structural patterns. Entering the new week, the initial trading bias for the pair remains neutral, as traders await clearer directional signals from key technical barriers on both the upside and the downside.

USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

In the immediate term, price action continues to oscillate within defined boundaries. On the upside, a decisive break above the resistance level at 159.02 would open the door for a push toward the next notable target at 160.38. Conversely, a firm breach on the downside below 156.06 would signal that the recent rebound from the 152.87 low has run its course, particularly after failing to establish sustained momentum above the 55-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA). Should such a downside break materialize, deeper selling pressure is expected to drive the currency pair back down toward the 152.87 support floor.

USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

Zooming out to a broader medium-term perspective, current price action evolving from the 163.97 medium-term peak is interpreted as a corrective phase following the preceding advance from the 139.87 low. Within this corrective structure, the initial downward leg may already have found a low at 152.87, holding just above crucial structural support located at 152.25. If the exchange rate can muster enough buying interest to secure a sustained break above the 55-day EMA—which is currently positioned at 158.01—it would pave the way for a renewed challenge of the 163.97 high. Nevertheless, market analysts anticipate that strong selling resistance will emerge around that neighborhood to cap any immediate upside expansion, likely setting the stage for another corrective falling leg before the overall pattern reaches its ultimate completion.

USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

Looking at the multi-year macro picture, the long-term outlook for USD/JPY remains fundamentally bullish as long as the critical baseline support at 139.87 holds firm. Even in the event of a deeper pullback or an extended consolidation phase, the broader secular uptrend originating from the 75.56 cyclical low recorded back in 2011 is favored to eventually resume once the ongoing corrective cycle from the 163.97 peak has fully run its course.

USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

The foreign exchange market continues to navigate these complex technical layers against a backdrop of evolving global macroeconomic conditions, interest rate differentials between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, and broader currency market volatility. As traders position themselves for the upcoming sessions, market attention remains firmly locked on whether USD/JPY can breach its immediate technical parameters or continue its current consolidation phase within the established range.
