Blackstone Raises $8.7 Billion for Energy Transition Fund to Target Decarbonization and Infrastructure

Alternative asset management giant Blackstone has successfully closed its latest flagship energy transition fund, securing $8.7 billion in capital commitments. The milestone marks a major achievement for the firm, hitting its hard cap just one year after officially launching the vehicle, and underscores a surging investor appetite for private equity strategies focused on decarbonization and climate solutions.

The newly closed fund, designated as Blackstone Energy Transition Partners V (BETP V), represents the fifth vintage of Blackstone’s specialized private equity strategy. BETP focuses on executing control-oriented equity investments spanning the entire energy transition value chain. This encompasses high-quality equipment manufacturers, service and technology providers, and large-scale infrastructure projects designed to directly contribute to global decarbonization efforts. Crucially, the mandate generally excludes investments centered on the direct ownership of hydrocarbon reserves and traditional extraction activities, aligning the capital pool squarely with the clean energy transition.

The successful final close of BETP V highlights a dramatic expansion in scale compared to its predecessor. Blackstone launched the fifth vintage in late 2025, following the final close of the fourth vintage, BETP IV, which secured $5.6 billion. With $8.7 billion now committed to the new fund, fundraising for BETP V has exceeded its predecessor by more than 50 percent, demonstrating a pronounced acceleration in institutional demand for sustainable infrastructure and transition-related assets.

The impressive capital raise builds upon Blackstone’s broader strategic vision laid out several years prior. In 2022, the firm publicly signaled its intention to deploy an estimated $100 billion into energy transition and climate change solution projects over the course of a decade. According to Blackstone’s historical performance metrics, investments managed under the BETP umbrella have generated an impressive 34 percent net internal rate of return (IRR) since the inception of the strategy in 1997, providing a strong track record that likely resonated with institutional limited partners participating in the latest fundraise.

David Foley, Global Head of Blackstone Energy Transition Partners, emphasized the unique economic and environmental drivers shaping the current market landscape. Commenting on the successful close of BETP V, Foley noted that the firm sees a generational opportunity for experienced investors within the energy transition space to deliver critical solutions to the operational challenges created by surging global demand for electricity.

Even before reaching its final hard cap, BETP V officially commenced its active investment period in June, moving swiftly to deploy capital into high-impact platforms and companies. To date, the fund has successfully backed three distinct platform companies. These include Kindle, a North American power generation platform; Fisterra, an energy transition and sustainability asset developer and investment company; and Viridon, an electric transmission platform designed to support the modernization of power grids.

In addition to launching and scaling these platforms, BETP V has executed three strategic acquisitions aimed at capturing value across critical industrial and technological adjacencies. These transactions include investments in Flow Control Systems, a specialized provider of data center cooling solutions; Dresser Utility Solutions, a company focused on measurement, control, and repair services for utilities; and DarkVision, a provider of advanced energy infrastructure asset inspection services. These early deployments illustrate the fund’s targeted strategy of supporting both macro-scale grid infrastructure and specialized technology providers essential for managing the energy demands of a digitalizing and decarbonizing economy.
