LanzaTech Boosts Stake in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Pioneer LanzaJet Through $20 Million Financing Round

Sustainable aviation fuel technology and production pioneer LanzaJet has successfully secured at least $20 million in new financing to accelerate its operations, scale production capacity, and supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to a growing list of global customers from its flagship Freedom Pines Fuels facility located in Soperton, Georgia.

The strategic funding infusion arrives as part of a broader recapitalization and debt reduction initiative spearheaded by LanzaJet’s primary shareholders and existing investors. This latest financial backing is strongly supported by carbon recycling technology company LanzaTech, prominent investor Vinod Khosla, and the broader LanzaJet Board of Directors. Notably, as a direct result of these transactions, Illinois-based LanzaTech will significantly increase its ownership stake in the SAF business, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the commercialization of low-carbon aviation fuels.

Launched originally in 2020 as a spin-off from LanzaTech, LanzaJet has established itself as an industry leader through the development of its proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology. This innovative process enables the large-scale production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel derived from a diverse array of waste-based and sustainable ethanol sources. These inputs include low-carbon sugarcane, specialized energy crops, forest residuals, agricultural waste, and various forms of organic waste, ensuring that the final fuel products significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petroleum-based jet fuel.

Alongside the financing announcement, LanzaJet also confirmed a key leadership transition. Jennifer Holmgren, the Chief Executive Officer of LanzaTech, will continue to serve as the Chair of the LanzaJet Board of Directors and has agreed to step in as interim Chief Executive Officer to guide the company through its next crucial phase of commercial growth and operational scaling. Holmgren succeeds outgoing CEO Jimmy Samaritzis, who recently announced his departure from the role to pursue another leadership opportunity within the rapidly expanding sustainable aviation fuel industry.

The newly secured capital builds directly upon a major operational milestone achieved by the company in November 2025, when LanzaJet officially announced that it had achieved full plant operation and successfully produced fuel at Freedom Pines Fuels. Recognized globally as the world’s first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet production facility, the Soperton plant boasts an annual production capacity of 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The facility has already demonstrated its capability by producing commercial-grade fuels that fully meet stringent ASTM International specifications, proving the commercial viability of the ATJ pathway.

Reflecting on the milestone financing and the company’s trajectory, Jennifer Holmgren emphasized the unique position LanzaJet holds within the clean energy landscape. LanzaTech has successfully taken first-of-a-kind technology from laboratory concepts to profitable commercial operation, establishing a blueprint for future clean fuel infrastructure. With a larger ownership stake and the unwavering support of the Board of Directors, leadership looks forward to bringing Freedom Pines Fuels and future LanzaJet plants to the same level of commercial success.
