As capital markets worldwide continue to grapple with greenwashing and the complex challenge of verifying corporate sustainability claims, exchanges face increasing pressure to establish standardized frameworks. The introduction of HKEX Green Equity addresses this market need by offering a structured, transparent, and independently assessed pathway for listed companies to highlight their environmental credentials. By doing so, the exchange group aims to boost the market visibility of qualifying green enterprises, facilitate better-informed capital allocation, and further cement Hong Kong’s status as a leading international sustainable finance hub.

The foundation of the new program rests upon the HKEX Green Equity Framework, which draws on internationally recognized taxonomies and the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) Green Equity Principles. This framework ensures that the designation remains aligned with broader global sustainability priorities. Under the operational mechanics of the program, companies wishing to receive the designation must undergo a rigorous evaluation conducted by independent reviewers. These independent assessments are intended to guarantee objectivity and build robust trust among institutional and retail investors alike, ensuring that only businesses with genuine environmental commitments carry the designation mark.
To qualify for the HKEX Green Equity designation, applicant companies must satisfy a strict set of quantitative and qualitative criteria. Financially, a company must derive at least 50 percent of its annual revenues from green business activities. In parallel, at least 50 percent of its total annual investments must be allocated directly toward green initiatives, projects, or assets. Furthermore, the framework imposes strict limits on carbon-intensive involvement, mandating that qualifying firms generate less than 5 percent of their revenues and investment from fossil fuel activities.

Beyond these financial thresholds, the criteria also emphasize broader corporate governance and operational compliance. Companies must strictly comply with all applicable environmental, social, labor, employment, and health and safety laws in the jurisdictions where they operate. They are also required to maintain robust internal processes designed to continually evaluate and mitigate the environmental sustainability of their day-to-day operations. Crucially, the governance structure of qualifying firms must include appropriate board-level oversight dedicated to steering and implementing the company’s long-term sustainability strategy.
Once a company successfully meets these comprehensive requirements and passes the independent review process, it is officially awarded the HKEX Green Equity designation. This status grants the enterprise the right to use the specialized designation mark across its corporate communications, investor relations materials, and reporting. However, maintaining the designation is contingent upon ongoing compliance, requiring businesses to undergo annual reassessments to ensure they continue to meet the stringent criteria set out by the framework.

The rollout of the designation program arrives at a critical juncture for global financial markets. Investor demand for sustainable investment opportunities has expanded exponentially in recent years, creating an urgent market requirement for credible, transparent mechanisms that cut through ambiguous marketing and spotlight genuine contributions to the green economy. By providing a clear framework backed by independent oversight, HKEX is positioning its marketplace to serve investors seeking authentic environmental assets while rewarding issuers that genuinely pivot their business models toward sustainability.
Paul Chow, HKEX Group General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the strategic importance of the launch for the exchange and the wider financial community. He noted that through a transparent framework and an independent assessment process, HKEX Green Equity will help strengthen the market visibility of qualifying companies. Furthermore, Chow highlighted that the program will support informed investment decisions and reinforce Hong Kong’s ongoing leadership position as a premier international sustainable finance hub.
