The Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals (ISEP) has officially announced the launch of a comprehensive, multi-tier Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors (RCAA). Designed to establish a definitive professional benchmark, the new register aims to clearly communicate the qualifications, specialized skills, and expertise of professionals operating within the rapidly expanding field of carbon accounting.
The rollout of the RCAA comes at a critical juncture for the corporate and financial sectors. As organizations worldwide face mounting regulatory pressure and internal demands to accurately measure, disclose, and actively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, the need for robust and reliable carbon data has never been higher. At the same time, standardized climate reporting frameworks—such as those driven by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)—are rapidly expanding across global markets.

Despite this heightened focus on corporate transparency, the industry has historically suffered from varying approaches to carbon foot-printing and wide disparities in the levels of professional expertise among practitioners. The new accreditation system is designed to directly address these inconsistencies by providing a trusted framework that verifies individual competency.
Reflecting on the launch, ISEP CEO Sarah Mukherjee emphasized the vital importance of data integrity in corporate decarbonization strategies, stating that as organizations look to decarbonize and reduce their environmental footprint, it is essential to have access to independently assessed, high-quality data and advice.
Developed in close collaboration with the Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA), the RCAA is intended to instill greater confidence among organizations, regulatory bodies, and formal reporting schemes regarding the technical capabilities and practical experience of the professionals calculating and auditing emissions data.
The newly established register encompasses four distinct professional tiers, structured to accommodate varying stages of career development and depth of technical responsibility. The system features the entry-level Technical Associate grade, which was previously launched to recognize foundational knowledge in the discipline. It is now complemented by two newly introduced levels: the Registered Practitioner and the Principal Carbon Accountant. These advanced grades reflect progressively greater responsibility, specialized technical expertise, and hands-on experience in managing complex organizational carbon inventories. Additionally, a dedicated Registered Carbon Accounting Auditor grade is planned for future implementation to further round out the ecosystem.
Through the creation and administration of this register, ISEP aims to actively promote effective carbon accounting practices across industries. By establishing high-quality standards rooted in the real-world knowledge and experience of seasoned professionals in the field, the institute seeks to enhance the professional credibility of registered carbon accountants and auditors alike. Furthermore, the multi-tier structure provides a clearly defined career pathway for practitioners, offering meaningful opportunities for professional growth, peer recognition, and career advancement within a specialized discipline that is rapidly transforming into a core pillar of corporate governance.
Andrew Griffiths, Co-Founder of the Carbon Accounting Alliance, welcomed the completion of the tiered framework, noting that with all three levels of professional registration for Carbon Accountants now fully launched, the industry finally has a robust and transparent approach to the formal qualification of credible carbon foot-printing expertise. He added that this development provides both practitioners and the users of corporate sustainability data with much-needed confidence in the rigorous skills of the individuals undertaking these complex calculations.
