Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has officially announced the launch of HKEX Green Equity, a new voluntary designation program engineered to help investors easily identify companies with a substantial and demonstrated commitment to environmentally sustainable business activities and investments. The initiative is also designed to enable qualifying companies to prominently showcase their tangible contributions to the broader green economy amid rising global demand for credible, transparent sustainability data.
Under the framework of the new program, eligible companies seeking the designation will be thoroughly evaluated by independent reviewers. This assessment process is rooted in the HKEX Green Equity Framework, which gauges the exact extent to which a company’s operational and financial activities actively contribute to the green economy. To ensure global relevance and rigorous alignment, the framework draws upon established international taxonomies and the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) Green Equity Principles, harmonizing the exchange’s local standards with international sustainability priorities.

The criteria established for securing the green equity designation are rigorous and multifaceted. To qualify, companies must meet strict financial and operational thresholds, demonstrating that at least 50% of their annual revenues are derived directly from green activities. Additionally, applicants must allocate at least 50% of their total annual investments toward green initiatives, while keeping revenues and investments tied to fossil fuel activities strictly below 5%. Furthermore, participating entities must maintain strict compliance with all applicable environmental, social, labor, employment, and health and safety laws. They are also required to have robust internal processes in place to continuously evaluate the environmental sustainability of their everyday operations, alongside appropriate board-level oversight dedicated to steering their overall sustainability strategy and implementation.
Companies that successfully satisfy all requirements set forth by the framework will be formally awarded the HKEX Green Equity designation. This status entitles them to utilize the official designation mark across their corporate communications, subject to ongoing compliance and mandatory annual reassessments to ensure they maintain their high environmental standards over time.

According to leadership at HKEX, the introduction of this new designation comes at a crucial juncture. As investor demand for genuine sustainable investment opportunities continues to accelerate globally, market participants face a growing need for credible, transparent, and verifiable ways to identify corporations that are genuinely driving the green transition. HKEX noted that the program is purposefully structured to increase the visibility of qualifying green businesses, thereby supporting more informed investment decisions through a transparent framework and an objective, independent assessment process.
Paul Chow, HKEX Group General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the strategic importance of the rollout for both the exchange and the wider region. Highlighting the core objectives of the initiative, Chow stated that through a transparent framework and a rigorous independent assessment process, HKEX Green Equity will help strengthen visibility for qualifying companies, support informed investment decisions, and further reinforce Hong Kong’s preeminent position as a leading international sustainable finance hub.
