LanzaJet Secures $20 Million in New Financing to Scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology and production pioneer LanzaJet announced that it has successfully secured at least $20 million in fresh financing. The capital injection is earmarked to scale production capabilities and supply high-demand sustainable aviation fuel to global customers directly from its groundbreaking Freedom Pines Fuels facility located in Soperton, Georgia.

Originally launched back in 2020 as a spin-off by carbon recycling technology innovator LanzaTech, the Illinois-based LanzaJet has carved out a pioneering role in the clean energy transition. The company has successfully developed and deployed proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, a chemical process that enables the large-scale commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. This innovative pathway utilizes a diverse range of waste-based and sustainable ethanol feedstocks, including low-carbon sugarcane, dedicated energy crops, forest residuals, agricultural waste, and various forms of organic waste.

The newly announced funding round is strongly backed by foundational supporters, including parent company LanzaTech, prominent investor Vinod Khosla, and the broader LanzaJet Board of Directors. As a central component of these financial transactions, LanzaTech will significantly increase its ownership stake in the SAF business. Company representatives noted that this latest round of funding is part of a broader, comprehensive recapitalization and debt reduction initiative recently undertaken by LanzaJet’s core group of shareholders and existing financial backers.

Alongside the financing announcement, LanzaJet confirmed a leadership transition at the executive level. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, will continue in her role as Chair of the LanzaJet Board and has additionally stepped in to serve as interim CEO. This leadership adjustment is designed to guide and support the company through its next crucial phase of commercial expansion and market penetration. Outgoing CEO Jimmy Samaritzis recently announced his departure from the role to pursue and take on another significant leadership opportunity within the broader sustainable aviation fuel industry.

This latest injection of capital follows a major operational milestone achieved by LanzaJet in November 2025. At that time, the company proudly announced that it had successfully achieved full plant operation and commenced commercial-scale fuel production at Freedom Pines Fuels, widely recognized as the world’s first commercial-scale alcohol-to-jet production facility. The Soperton plant boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. Crucially, the facility has already consistently produced fuels that meet rigorous international ASTM specifications, proving the commercial viability and reliability of the technology.

Reflecting on the milestone and the ongoing strategic evolution of the company, LanzaTech CEO and LanzaJet interim chief Jennifer Holmgren emphasized the significance of the achievement. LanzaTech has taken first-of-a-kind technology to profitable commercial operation, she noted, adding that with a larger ownership stake and the unwavering support of the Board, the leadership team looks forward to bringing Freedom Pines Fuels and future LanzaJet plants to the same high level of commercial success.
