Amazon and Microsoft Partner on 750 Million Liter Water Replenishment Project in Germany

Tech giants Amazon and Microsoft have announced a collaborative water replenishment project in the Hesse region of Germany, designed to restore natural wetland conditions and bolster local groundwater resources. The initiative is projected to return more than 750 million liters of water annually to the local groundwater supply, marking a significant joint environmental effort between two of the world’s largest cloud computing and technology infrastructure providers.

The announcement comes at a time when technology companies are facing escalating scrutiny regarding the local environmental footprints of their rapidly expanding datacenter operations. As artificial intelligence workloads and cloud services continue to scale upward, data centers demand substantial energy and water resources for cooling and daily operations. To address these concerns, both Amazon and Microsoft have established ambitious "water positive" corporate goals, pledging to replenish more freshwater than they consume across their global operations.

Microsoft recently announced that it achieved its water positive target for the first time in 2025, reaching the milestone five years ahead of its original 2030 goal. Meanwhile, Amazon recently revealed that it has reached 75 percent of its goal to be water positive in its data centers by 2030, while simultaneously more than doubling its data center water efficiency through advanced engineering and cooling optimization. Despite these operational improvements, both companies have emphasized that internal efficiency is only part of their broader sustainability strategy, prompting the need for large-scale external investments in community water stewardship.

Christian Schütz, Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft Germany, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that when major technology companies invest jointly in water stewardship, it signals that the sector takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. He noted that such collective action can make a tangible, lasting difference for the regional ecosystems and communities that technology infrastructure depends upon.

The newly announced project will be implemented by the German environmental NGO NABU, formally known as Naturschutzbund Deutschland, in close collaboration with regional partners and public authorities. The initiative will focus on restoring wetlands across 40 hectares in the Vogelsberg region, which serves as a vital natural source of drinking water for the metropolitan area of Frankfurt. NABU is executing the environmental restoration work utilizing financial backing provided jointly by Amazon and Microsoft.

The restoration effort relies heavily on nature-based solutions designed to reverse historical ecological degradation. The project plan includes the removal of artificial drainage systems that have long dried out the landscape, the creation of shallow water zones intended to slow natural water flow and increase subterranean infiltration, and the implementation of extensive grassland management practices aimed at reducing agricultural nutrient runoff into local streams and waterways.

According to NABU, the organization will collaborate directly with approximately 10 local landholders to acquire 80 hectares of land across two primary project sites situated near the town of Herbstein. Additional land acquisitions in the surrounding area are already planned through 2028 to expand the geographic scope and long-term ecological impact of the wetland restoration.

Beyond its primary function of replenishing local groundwater supplies, the project is anticipated to yield substantial biodiversity benefits. Environmental planners expect the restored wetlands to recreate critical natural habitats for several native bird species that have experienced significant population declines throughout the region in recent decades. Among the target species that stand to benefit from the habitat recovery are whinchats, snipe, wood sandpipers, and gadwall.

To ensure accountability and measure the ecological success of the initiative, the biodiversity impacts will be rigorously assessed through annual monitoring programs. Wildlife experts will track populations of mammals, birds, insects, amphibians, and reptiles across the project sites in a comprehensive monitoring window scheduled to run between 2028 and 2038.

Michael Hanisch, Head of Technology at AWS Germany, underscored the philosophy behind the collaboration, noting that while efficient water use remains a foundational element of how the company operates, it is merely a starting point rather than a final destination. He added that the company aims to actively contribute to the improvement of local water systems upon which surrounding communities rely every day, reinforcing a commitment to regional environmental resilience alongside corporate growth.
