The Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals (ISEP) has officially announced the launch of a comprehensive, multi-tier Register of Carbon Accountants and Auditors (RCAA). The newly established system is designed to provide a definitive professional benchmark, effectively communicating the precise qualifications, technical expertise, and practical experience of carbon accounting professionals across the corporate and financial landscapes.

Developed in close collaboration with the Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA), the RCAA arrives at a critical juncture for the global business community. As regulatory frameworks evolve and corporate accountability takes center stage, organizations face unprecedented pressure to accurately measure, disclose, and ultimately reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Standardized climate reporting systems, such as those driven by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), are rapidly expanding their reach and requirements.

However, despite the surging demand for robust, audit-ready carbon data, the methods used to calculate emissions and the levels of professional expertise among practitioners have historically varied wildly. This inconsistency has occasionally left organizations vulnerable to data discrepancies, compliance risks, and a lack of comparative reliability in their environmental disclosures. The launch of the RCAA aims to bridge this critical gap by establishing clear, independently verified standards of competence.

Highlighting the urgency behind the initiative, ISEP CEO Sarah Mukherjee emphasized the vital need for dependable expertise in the rapidly growing decarbonization sector.

"As organisations look to decarbonise and reduce their environmental footprint, it is essential to have access to independently assessed, high-quality data and advice," Mukherjee stated, pointing to the foundational goals of the new registry.

The RCAA is structured to encompass four distinct professional tiers, creating a comprehensive framework that addresses every stage of a carbon accountant’s career. The system features the already-launched entry-level Technical Associate grade, which is designed to recognize and validate foundational knowledge in greenhouse gas accounting. This foundation is now complemented by two newly introduced levels: the Registered Practitioner and the Principal Carbon Accountant. These advanced tiers are specifically tailored to reflect progressively greater operational responsibilities, deep technical expertise, and extensive hands-on experience in the field. Additionally, a specialized Registered Carbon Accounting Auditor grade is planned for future rollout, rounding out the complete lifecycle of corporate carbon assurance.

By establishing this register, ISEP aims to achieve several interconnected goals within the broader sustainability community. First, the institute hopes to promote highly effective carbon accounting practices by anchoring industry standards in the collective knowledge and verified experience of seasoned professionals. Second, the registry is expected to significantly enhance the professional credibility of registered carbon accountants and auditors, giving corporate boards, external regulators, and institutional investors greater trust in the underlying data. Finally, the multi-tier structure provides a clearly defined career pathway for carbon accountants, offering meaningful opportunities for professional growth, peer recognition, and continuous career development.

The collaborative nature of the initiative has also drawn praise from industry leaders who have witnessed firsthand the challenges of fragmented carbon accounting practices. Andrew Griffiths, Co-Founder of the Carbon Accounting Alliance, underscored the transformative impact the fully realized register will have on the broader profession.

"With all three levels of professional registration for Carbon Accountants fully launched, our industry finally has a robust and transparent approach to formal qualification of credible carbon foot-printing expertise," Griffiths said. He noted that this framework will give both practitioners and the end-users of corporate data a renewed sense of confidence in the skills and accuracy of the individuals undertaking complex emissions calculations.

As corporations worldwide continue to refine their net-zero strategies and navigate tightening regulatory landscapes, the ability to rely on certified professionals will likely become a cornerstone of credible ESG reporting. Through the RCAA, ISEP and the Carbon Accounting Alliance have established a transparent, rigorous mechanism to ensure that the individuals crunching the numbers possess the verified capability to guide organizations toward a lower-carbon future.
